Bay County and its municipal and healthcare partners are launching a public information campaign aimed at encouraging people to take voluntary action to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

The $50,000 effort is being funded via the CARES Act and will utilize a variety of media channels, including television, print, billboards, radio, digital, and social media to ask the public to “Be a Hero” in the fight against COVID-19.

“In Bay County, we know what it means to ‘Be a Hero’,” Bay County Commission Chairman Philip “Griff” Griffitts said. “After Hurricane Michael, each of us was a hero to someone, in some way, as we worked together to help each other through recovery. Now, due to the pandemic, we have another opportunity to be a hero, but this time by simply wearing a mask, washing your hands and staying home when you’re sick.”

The “Be a Hero” campaign aims to encourage the public to adhere to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), particularly regarding social distancing, protecting vulnerable populations, mask-wearing when distancing is impossible, and personal hygiene.

To accomplish this, the campaign will feature ads including “everyday heroes,” highlighting that the people of Bay County, due to our collective experience through Hurricane Michael and the subsequent recovery efforts, know something about what it means to be an “everyday hero.”
