Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement Division enforces all Bay County Codes, Bay County Land Development Regulations, and the Beaches and Shores Ordinance, which regulates beach and motor scooter vendors.

Does the Bay County Code Enforcement Division enforce codes in the Cities located within the County?

No. We only enforce codes in the unincorporated areas. Each municipality has their own Code Enforcement Department. Phone numbers for the municipalities code enforcement are:

Does the Code Enforcement Division enforce building codes?

No. The Builders Services Division enforces all building codes.

No. The Builders Services Division regulates contractors and contractor concerns.

Do I need an occupational license to operate a business in unincorporated Bay County?

Presently, Bay County does not have an occupational license. However, zoning regulates where businesses are allowed. You need to contact Planning & Zoning for questions concerning zoning, or see the zoning guidelines by clicking the Bay County Land Development Regulations link above.

Can I operate a business out of my home?

Bay County does allow for home occupations, but there are some restrictions. You can see the home occupation regulation by clicking the Bay County Land Development Regulation link above and go to Chapter 13, Section 1302.

Can I place a sign advertising my business on the right-of-way?

No. Signs are not allowed on the right-of-way. You can see other sign restrictions by clicking the Bay County Land Development Regulations link above and go to Chapter 30.

What kinds of signs can I have at my business? Which signs are prohibited?

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in my yard? Does Code Enforcement issue these permits?

Permits are required to remove protected trees in the Urban or Suburban Service Area, and any Historic, Specimen, Champion, or Heritage trees. Permits are issued through Planning & Zoning. I want to put up a fence. Do I need a permit?

No, but there are restrictions concerning fencing. You can see the fences and hedges ordinance by clicking the Bay County Land Development Regulations link above and go to Chapter 13, Section 1305.

What about septic tank complaints? Does code enforcement handle these?

No. Septic tanks are regulated by the Bay County Health Department. You can contact them at (850) 872-4660.
